Environmental Exposure and Health Research Center, University of Science and Technology Beijing

The center’s research fields cover the population’s environmental exposure behavior patterns and exposure parameters, the health effects of environmental pollutants, precision exposure measurement and simulation technology, environmental benchmarks/standards, and environmental management support research. At present, the team has published more than 100 papers and more than 10 monographs. It has presided over the development of China’s first nationwide large-scale “Research on Environmental Exposure Behavior Patterns of Chinese People” (including 91,000 adults and 75,000 children). The editor-in-chief completed China’s first Chinese Population Exposure Parameter Manual, the first Research Report on Environmental Exposure Behavior Patterns of Chinese Population, filled the gap of exposure parameters in our country. The team also edited the environmental protection standards Basic Data Set for Exposure Parameter Survey (HJ 968-2019) and Technical Specification for Exposure Parameter Survey (HJ877-2017). In addition, based on the characteristics of human environmental exposure behavior and the precise exposure of pollutants with research on health risk assessment, the team developed and established an analysis and evaluation method for individual exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants in the air, PAH exposure evaluation platform, a sample collection device for individuals exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants in the air, and an air quality early warning devices for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. A number of achievements have been applied for invention patents, and related achievements Crowd Exposure and Health Risk Assessment Technology for Municipal Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal won the second prize of 2017 Environmental Protection Science and Technology Award, Regional Environmental Pollution Population Exposure Risk Prevention and Control Technology and Its Application won the second prize of the 2018 National Science and Technology Progress Award. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the team compiled the first set of New Coronavirus Pneumonia Exposure Risk Prevention Manual , providing guidance and scientific advice for the general population, college teachers and students, environmental protection practitioners, and special occupation groups.

The Center was established in October 2017. Since its establishment, the Institute has built a scientific and technological innovation platform for environmental processes and health effects, an environmental and health flow observation system, an indoor environmental simulation and pollution research laboratory, and a bioaerosol and gene monitoring laboratory under the support of “985 Project”. We have organized experts from environmental science, chemistry, basic medicine, public health, clinical medicine and other fields to conduct interdisciplinary research in environmental exposure, environmental epidemiology and environmental toxicology. Presided over and carried out projects including the key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China “Environmental behavior, interface process and health effects of fine particles and ultrafine particles in the atmosphere”, and a major project “The chemical process of secondary air pollution and its health effects”, and in cooperation with internationally renowned scholars and scientific research institutions, the “Air Pollution and Human Health Physiological Mechanism” project funded by NIHES and HEI of the United States, the EU’s 7th Framework and the Ministry of Science and Technology International Cooperation Project “Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Strategy for Urban Environmental Public Health impact” and so on. In addition, the institute also vigorously promotes academic exchanges in the field of environment and health, such as hosting the “Sources, Environmental Behavior, Health Risks and Control of Atmospheric Fine Particulate Matter” seminars, and hosting the “Atmospheric Atmospheric Chemistry” (IGAC) International Conference 2012. The “Chemistry and Health” branch organized the Xiangshan Conference “Health Effects of Atmospheric PM2.5 Fine Particulate Matter” and the Shuangqing Forum “The Impact of Air Pollution on Climate and Health” with the support of the National Foundation of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The research center was established in 1978 and has been engaged in the ecological environmental impact of agricultural chemicals such as pesticides, fertilizers, and agricultural films. It is the technical support agency for the environmental management and supervision of pesticides and other toxic and hazardous chemicals of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the national environmental science and technology innovation base. The main research directions include: research on environmental behavior fate, environmental toxicology and ecological effects of pesticides and other toxic and hazardous chemicals; research on pesticide environmental safety assessment and risk assessment technology; research on the impact of agricultural chemicals on water environment and agricultural products pollution; persistence and environment Research on identification and screening technology of hormone pesticides; research on non-point source pollution control technology of agricultural chemicals. Focusing on research directions and goals, it has undertaken dozens of major national scientific research tasks, and has achieved a number of important scientific research results. It has strong scientific research and innovation capabilities, especially in pesticide environmental safety assessment and pollution control technology, providing for national pesticide environmental management with strong technical support. The laboratory has a sophisticated scientific research team with more than 30 scientific researchers, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 researchers, and 6 associate researchers. In recent years, it has won 5 provincial (ministerial) level science and technology awards, published more than 200 papers, more than 10 monographs, and more than 10 invention patents. Many important environmental policy recommendations have been applied in my country's environmental management.
